寸头、板寸和渐变怎么选?5 种短发在同一张脸上的对比

Buzz cut, crew cut, military cut, fade: barbers use these names every day, but most comparison pages show five different models with five different faces, which makes it hard to see what actually changes.
So we did the opposite. Every picture in this guide is the same man from the same photo, run through Eidora's buzz cut filter once per style. They are AI previews, not real haircuts, but because the face, lighting and angle never change, the only thing you are comparing is the hair.
Below you will find what each cut is, how short it really is, how often it needs a touch-up, and which face shapes tend to suit it.

The Original Photo

This is the starting point: medium-length hair with volume on top and shorter sides. Keep it in mind as you scroll, because each style removes a different amount of that top length.
If you want to run the same comparison on yourself, use a clear, front-facing photo in even light, like this one. The previews are only as good as the photo you give the filter.
Buzz Cut: One Short Length All Over

A classic buzz cut is clipped to one length over the whole head, usually with a #1 to #4 guard (about 3 to 13 mm). There is no styling and nothing to hide behind, so your head shape and hairline become the main event.
Upkeep: a touch-up every 2 to 3 weeks keeps it sharp, and many people do it at home with clippers.
Suits best: oval, square and diamond faces, and anyone with a smooth, rounded head shape. Our buzz cut face shape guide goes through every face shape in detail.
Crew Cut: Short, With a Little More on Top

A crew cut keeps about 1.5 to 2.5 cm (under an inch) on top, brushed up or slightly forward, with the sides and back clipped short and tapered. It reads as clean and short, but softer than a buzz cut because the top still has texture.
How to ask for it: "short tapered sides, about an inch on top, scissor or a #6 to #8 guard on top."
Upkeep: every 3 to 4 weeks.
Suits best: almost everyone. It is the safest choice for round and long faces, where a full buzz cut can exaggerate the face shape, because the bit of height on top adds balance.
Military Cut: Very Short and Very Neat

The military cut, also called a high and tight, has a very short, neat top with sides and back tapered almost to the skin. It is sharper and more structured than a plain buzz cut, because the contrast between the top and the sides frames the face.
Upkeep: every 2 weeks; the tight sides grow out quickly.
Suits best: square, oval and diamond faces with a defined jaw. It also works well with stubble or a short beard, as in this preview.
High Fade: Short Top, Sides Fading High

A fade is not a length, it is a gradient: the sides go from very short or bare skin at the bottom to longer hair higher up. In a high fade, that transition starts high on the head, near the temples, so most of the sides look very short.
Upkeep: every 1 to 2 weeks if you want the fade to stay crisp.
Suits best: round faces (the short sides make the face look narrower) and anyone who wants a bolder, more modern look than a plain buzz.
In AI previews, high and skin fades can look similar from the front. The exact height of the fade is something to agree on with your barber; the preview shows you the overall shape.
Skin Fade: Down to Bare Skin

A skin fade (or bald fade) takes the sides all the way down to bare skin, usually around the ears and neckline, then blends up into the top. It is the cleanest-looking of the five and the one that shows the most scalp.
Upkeep: weekly to every 2 weeks; skin fades lose their sharp edge fastest.
Suits best: oval, square and round faces, and people with a smooth head shape at the sides and back.
Which One Should You Pick?
Want zero styling and the lowest cost? Buzz cut. Clippers at home, done.
Want short but not too bold? Crew cut. It is the easiest of the five to wear to any job.
Have a round face? Crew cut or high fade. Height on top or very short sides both help.
Have a long face? Crew cut. Avoid making the sides very short, which makes the face look longer.
Want the sharpest, freshest look and don't mind frequent visits? Skin fade or military cut.
Not sure about your head shape? Start with a crew cut or a #3 to #4 buzz. You can always go shorter next time; you cannot go longer.
Quick Answers
What is the difference between a buzz cut and a crew cut? A buzz cut is one length all over. A crew cut is short on the sides with a little more length on top (about an inch), so it has more shape.
Is a fade a buzz cut? Not exactly. A fade describes how the sides blend from short to longer. You can combine them: a buzz cut with a fade on the sides is a popular variation.
What guard number is a buzz cut? Usually #1 to #4: #1 is about 3 mm, #2 about 6 mm, #3 about 10 mm and #4 about 13 mm.
Which short haircut is lowest maintenance? The plain buzz cut. Fades and military cuts look best with touch-ups every one to two weeks.
Can I see these styles on my own face first? Yes. The buzz cut filter has Buzz Cut, Crew Cut, Military, High Fade and Skin Fade styles, the same ones used for every picture in this guide.
Try All Five on Your Own Photo
Seeing five cuts on someone else's face is useful. Seeing them on your own face is what actually settles the decision.
Upload one clear photo to the buzz cut filter, run it through each style, and compare the results side by side. Each preview takes about half a minute, and you can try your first one without signing in. Take the one you like to your barber, and you will both know exactly what you are asking for.
